The 2019 edition marked a fundamental shift in the tournament’s visual architecture - when the event promotion, architectural design, and product collaboration really came together under a single, seamless design story.

Code-named African Bauhaus, the identity synthesized 100 years of the Bauhaus “form follows function” mantra with the vibrant soul of African wax cloth patterns. I paired four primary shapes (circle, square, triangle, and lozenge) with a palette uniting the colors of the French and West African flags, creating a modular system that functioned as a universal visual language across all platforms.

Design story

Lockup construction

In 1923 Vassily Kandinsky circulated a questionnaire at the Bauhaus, asking respondents to fill in a triangle, square, and circle with the primary colours. He hoped to discover a universal correspondence between form and colour, embodied in the equation blue = circle, red = square and yellow = triangle.

Jordan x Quai 54 collection

Working with the Jordan Brand team, I scaled the African Bauhaus grid for a global footwear and apparel collection. The challenge was ensuring the pattern maintained its integrity when applied to the complex geometries of the Air Jordan VIII and Air Jordan I Low. By treating the identity as an “industrial wrap”, we achieved a level of product-to-event synergy that has become the benchmark for my tenure as art director for Quai 54 since 2015.

Event design: landmark integration

Held at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the 2019 arena design was engineered to be visually complementary to Paris’ most iconic landmark. The high-contrast, primary-color court served as a high-visibility stage, providing a sharp, contemporary backdrop for global broadcast and photography. The integration of the African Bauhaus pattern across the stadium’s entrances and grandstands created an immersive environment that felt both culturally rooted and architecturally significant.
