Olympiques !
Broadcast design package
Client: Elephant Doc
Broadcaster: France 2
Commissioned by French national broadcaster France 2 and produced by Elephant Doc, Olympiques ! is a 90-minute prime-time documentary event designed to anchor the cultural narrative leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The program, voiced by Marion Cotillard, revisits a century of France’s sporting history through the eyes of 30 iconic French Olympians. To match the monumental scale of the subject, I developed a comprehensive on-air identity and motion system, including a 50-second cinematic opening sequence that establishes the premium institutional tone required for a nationwide prime-time audience.
I designed a custom wordmark echoing the hexagon geometry of France. The program’s institutional DNA is subtly encoded into the typography, grounding the program in a sense of national legacy.
The 3-level Olympic podium serves as the central visual metaphor for the motion design; utilized in wipes and transitions, its three vertical panels also reflect the structural proportions of the French flag as seen in the program’s title screen.
The system: symbolic & narrative
Temporal bumpers
High-impact bumper animations designed to introduce specific historical eras - from Athens 1896 to Tokyo 2020 - act as chronological milestones throughout the narrative.
Bespoke over-the-shoulder graphics and lower-thirds feature visual representations of each interviewee’s specific Olympic medal count.
Athlete presentations & lower thirds
To bridge the gap between contemporary 4K interviews and historical archives, I conceptualized a specific VFX transition grammar. Rather than standard cuts, I created translucent floating screens that appear in the physical space of the interviewee. This allows the archive footage to function as a shared visual reference between the subject and the viewer, embodying the eyewitness perspective of the documentary.
